My freebie is a taste of my Good Reading Strategies and Comprehension Activities resource. Inside it has pages that focus on three reading strategies that are proven to help students master comprehension.
Activation – Little minds need to be primed to read and comprehend. This activity does just that! I use these pages to build anticipation toward a text, to set a purpose for reading, and to explore background knowledge with my students.
Plot Structure – Students who understand how plot structure works can deep dive into fiction. They can anticipate the action, understand characters, and look for changes. Whether it be chapter, short story, or an entire novel, students need to be taught how to identify the key parts of a story. This helps them to remember the story and to understand the sequence of a story.
Summarizing – A good reader needs to know how to quickly summarize a story. Distinguishing relevant details from “fluffy” details is an important skill. With these pages, your students are guided along the entire way. The outline helps students gather their thoughts and put them in order. The rough draft guides them through the first write and an anchor summary provides inspiration!
What I love about these activities is they explicitly teach the reading skill right on the page! If I realize I have not taught “problem and solution” in a while, I grab the page and use it! If I come across a non-fiction text with awesome vocabulary in it, I grab a page and use it! These pages are incredibly versatile and useful!
For my independent students, I often assign them digitally! Students read the assigned text and are offered an option of one or more pages to check their reading. These are perfect for small, independent literature circles. Take a peek at them here!
