What to Teach in March – 9 Great Tips

March can be a long month! I mean a loooong month, no holidays, no breaks, no long weekends. Am I right? Here are 9 great ideas to help you know what to teach in March.

Lucky For Me!

When I was a new teacher, I remember the veteran teachers lamenting the month of March. (Our Spring Break is always the second week of April.) Luckily, my mentor teacher pulled me aside and said, “I LOVE March! It is the month when I do my most effective teaching! I know my students well, my classroom management is as good as it will ever be, and there are no holidays to throw the kids off. “

With a slight shift in mindset, March soon became my best month of teaching! It can become your best month too!

Ideas to Make March Your Best Month of Teaching!

  • Dig into a novel and take the time to teach it and enjoy it. Two of my favorites this time of year: Bridge to Terabithia and Tuck Everlasting. Can you hear the figurative language now?
  • Use the time to review math concepts you taught earlier in the year.
  • Tackle a challenging math unit.
  • Have students write for extended blocks of time to develop their writing skills.
  • Complete every step in the writing process and end with a beautifully written paragraph or essay. Give your students the gift of composition. Take an entire week just on topic sentences.
  • Do some hands-on science experiments.
  • Engage in Project-Based Learning Tasks that require cooperative learning and critical thinking skills
  • Celebrate Pi Day! Celebrating Pi Day (March 14) can be as simple as a printable fun pack or as elaborate as an entire afternoon of rotations. It’s the love of math that counts.
  • St. Patrick’s Day is usually not as chaotic as other holidays. But to keep those leprechauns from pinching each other, keep them busy with some colorful, low-prep activities.

Her simple statement changed my teaching career! My hope is it will change yours!

You’re amazing!
