Multiplication looks simple from the outside. It’s “just facts,” right?
But for many kids, it’s the first time math starts to feel like memorization instead of reasoning. If a child hasn’t fully grasped what multiplication means, the facts feel random. That’s when you see:
Counting by ones for every problem
Guessing (and hoping it’s right)
Meltdowns during timed tests
A huge confidence drop that leads to the “I am bad at math!” doubt.
This gets even more intense in the upper elementary grades, because multiplication shows up everywhere: multi-digit multiplication, fractions, decimals, volume, and multi-step word problems. If a child’s foundation is shaky, the pressure builds fast.

What Multiplication Success Can Look Like (In Just Minutes a Day)
When multiplication clicks, kids don’t just “know facts.”

“I can picture it.”
“I have a strategy.”
“I can figure it out even if I forget.”
That mindset shift is HUGE for struggling kids, and it pays off long-term as they move into higher-level math, where students constantly break apart numbers, use the distributive property, and solve more complex problems.
With the right routine, most families can see progress with:
10–15 minutes a day
4 days a week
A focus on meaning first, then strategies, then fluency

Step by Step Method to Help Your Child Learn Multiplication
Step 1: Start with Meaning (Not Memorization)
Before your child can be fluent, they need to understand one simple idea:
Multiplication means equal groups.
That’s it. That’s the foundation.
If your child can explain what 6 × 4 means (“six groups of four”), they’re building real understanding, not just repeating a fact.
Try this tonight (2 minutes)
Ask:
“What does 4 × 6 mean?”
“How many groups?”
“How many in each group?”
Then draw 4 circles and put 6 dots in each. Count the dots together.
It sounds simple… because it is. And it works.
Step 2: Use Arrays (The Secret Weapon for Learning Multiplication)
An array is just a neat rectangle made with rows and columns. It’s one of the best tools for helping kids in Upper Elementary because it makes multiplication visible.
Example: 4 × 6
4 rows
6 dots in each row
Arrays help kids:
stop guessing
understand “turnaround facts” (4×6 is the same as 6×4)
build the foundation for area models and multi-digit multiplication
If your child is stuck on “hard facts” like 7×8 or 6×7, arrays are a calm way to rebuild confidence.
Step 3: Teach a Few Strategies (So Kids Can Figure It Out)
If your child forgets facts, the answer isn’t more pressure. The answer is giving them tools.
Here are three strategies I recommend for parents because they work across grade levels and they connect directly to algebraic thinking:
Strategy A: Near-Doubles
If they know 6×6, they can find 6×7:
6×7 = 6×6 + 6
36 + 6 = 42
Strategy B: Break Apart (Distributive Property without the big name)
This is a game-changer for “hard facts.”
7×8 = 7×(5+3)
7×5 + 7×3
35 + 21 = 56
Strategy C: Make a Ten (Perfect for 9s)
9×6 = (10×6) − 6
60 − 6 = 54
When kids have strategies, they stop feeling helpless. They start feeling capable.
Step 4: Use a Short Daily Routine (This Is the Part That Makes It Stick)
If you want a simple structure to help your child learn multiplication, use this routine. It’s fast, repeatable, and doesn’t require you to prep a bunch of materials.
The 12-Minute Multiplication Routine
1) Talk (1 minute)
“What does 6×7 mean?”
2) See (2 minutes)
Draw an array or area model quickly.
3) Do Together (4 minutes)
Do 3 problems:
you do 1 out loud
do 1 together
child does 1 with support
4) You Do (4 minutes)
Child solves 4 problems that match the focus.
5) Apply (1 minute)
Quick story problem: “If there are 6 packs with 4 stickers, how many stickers total?”
This routine is the sweet spot for primary and upper elementary learners because it includes:
meaning
strategy practice
fluency practice
real-life application
And it doesn’t turn your evening into a battle.
Step 5: Teach Facts in a Smart Order (So It Doesn’t Feel Like a Giant Wall)
Parents often ask, “Where do I start?” Here’s a simple sequence that builds confidence.
×0, ×1, ×10
×2, ×5
×4, ×8 (use doubling)
×3, ×6 (6s are double 3s)
×9 (make a ten)
×7 (save it for last—use break apart)
Pick 3–5 facts per week and stick with them for several days. Consistency matters more than variety.
Step 6: Make Word Problems Predictable (So Kids Don’t Freeze)
Word problems feel hard because kids have to interpret the story and choose the operation.
Here’s the simple 3-step routine I taught in class:
What’s happening? (Are there equal groups?)
What’s the equation? (“There are ___ groups of ___.”)
How will we solve? (choose a strategy)
Example:
“There are 7 rows of 6 chairs.”
7 groups of 6 → 7×6
Use break apart: 7×5 + 7×1
This is a great bridge for kids to choose a method. It gives ownership, shows them there is more than one way to solve a problem, and makes critical thinking essential.
Real Life Tips to Help Your Child Learn Multiplication
If your child is struggling, use these quick responses in the moment:
“I don’t get it.”
→ “Let’s make it visible.” Draw an array.
“I forgot.”
→ “That’s okay. Let’s use a strategy.” Break it apart.
“I’m bad at math.”
→ “You’re not bad at math. You’re still building this skill.” Then do one easy win.
“This is too hard.”
→ Shrink the task. Two problems. End on success.
A calm ending is better than a long argument. You’re building confidence and math skills.
